One of my friends was living in Teheran when the revolution started. His father worked for an oil company at the time. The friend was an aspiring photographer and was very keen to get out there on the streets. But in a blow that destroyed any chance he might have had of becoming a hard-bitten, cynical war photographer, his Mum wouldn't let him go out. He still hasn't lived it down, and despite him becoming a photographer and earning a living that way for over 20 years, I do like to remind him sometimes. I, on the other hand, watched it from the comfort of a very beautiful apartment in Nice, overlooking the bay.
