glad you said SOME. There are a good number
of popular high phono carts in the $5K-$10K
range now that are based on sound engineering
with unique designs, not hand carved cases
with generic guts. 

The thing to rememeber in all this is that
the high end audio market is small market.
Production is low. this causes the prices
to skyrocket because there is no economy
of scale whatsoever. Product development
cost and tooling costs per item produced
are very high and that has to be recouped
in the per unit sales price.

Some of the most cherished cartridges at the moment reside in hand  
carved shells created in Japan by knarled old men, using exotic woods  
and filled with the best available internal components that are mass  
produced but using better spec'd materials.

  Just like my old Porsha had an engine that was part of the best  
spec'd and balanced 3-4% of the VW engine assembly line, then had a P  
stamped in front of the serial number. The rest had a W.
