Actually it's not the herd instinct I was thinking of, it's the road. I'm
quite shocked by the photograph - it's the first time I've seen outside the
frame of that view, and I had always thought that it was wilderness that
took a bit of effort to get to.

The National Parks people have done a pretty amazing job of making some of the most scenic areas of the US accessible, but at the same time have managed to do a really decent job of not spoiling it for everyone. If one is mobility challenged, one can still see some of the nicest scenery that America have to offer, but at the same time, a very short walk from the parking lot takes you away from the herds and into at least a pretense of wilderness.
