I don't have the 165, but I've been considering it or the newer 200mm.  
The 105's minimum focus distance is no good for anything closer than a 
head-and-shoulders shot unless you use either a close-up filter or an 
extension tube (I recommend getting a tube).  I'm not much of a head 
shot shooter, so picking up a traditional portrait focal length has been 
low on my list of priorities.  Though I regret it a bit now, a few years 
back I passed up an old style 200mm f4 for 67 for the ludicrously low 
price of $200 CDN (which is something like $130 US, I think), because 
the minimum focus on it STILL only got me a head-and-shoulders shot, 
just from further back.

I hear the newer 200mm has a much better minimum focus.
