There used to be an artificial hang gliding hill somewhere around Raeford, NC. Don't quite know exactly WHERE it was, 'cause I only ever saw it one time from a helicopter flying over Ft. Bragg. It was somewhere south-west of St Mere Eglise DZ & Mott Lake.

The big location for hang gliding in NC is, of course, Jockey's Ridge ... got started in the area when NASA was testing Rogallo wing designs for Gemini.

NASA chose the area for some of the same reasons the Wright Brothers originally chose Kitty Hawk, almost guaranteed winds for testing gliders & soft sand for landing in - although proximity to Langley and Wallops Island also played a role in the choice.

When the Wright Brothers were here, the giant dunes stretched all the way up and down the coast in the area.

Jockey's Ridge almost went the way of the rest of the dunes - hauled off in a dump truck for fill to build condos on, but fortunately a few people realized just in time what was being lost and agitated to save the dune; got it made into a state park.

Thanks Dave,
#2 was an unusual sight for a mid-western boy like me.
We don't do para-sailing/soaring in the flatlands.
