I was about to suggest the same as Stig for LCD lighting. :-)

There's really only one way to check for preflash. Do a couple of
shots with the camera away from your face.

Another test you could do is to shoot a series of the same scene at
different apertures. If the histogram creeps gradually down into
shadow as you stop down, the flash delivers the same output regardless
of camera setting and is broken.

Btw, when my flash was faulty, it refused to do P-TTL at one
particular zoom setting, but working almost as expected (slight
underexposure) at other zoom settings. Took some testing to figure
that one out... Don't give up until you've made heads and tails of
what goes on, Igor! :-)
