Larry,

I have the 24mm f/1.8 (the 20mm, 24mm and 28mm all share the same
body) and your description is correct for a non-faulty lens. It would
be nice if setting the lens to manual focus disengaged the drive gear,
but Sigma didn't think that was a good idea...probably just to annoy
you and me  :-)

In related matters: How do you find this lens wide open? My 24mm is
not great at f/1.8, improves noticeably by f/2, and is pretty good at
f/2.2. Oh, and have you noticed that wide open the camera body reads
f/1.7, not f/1.8?
