have recently found out how to open up files in Finder as thumbs; but
it does not seem to work all the time.

here are some techniques much faster than iPhoto:

Finder Quicklook (in 10.5 and above), which i think you are referring to above, works great for me with PEFs, DNGs, JPEGs ... what happens when it doesn't work for you?

basically select a group of files (e.g. command-A to select all files in the current folder), press space bar, then click the "four rectangles" icon (it will say "index sheet" if you hover over it)

alternatively, if you Quicklook one image (by pressing spacebar with a single file selected), many people don't realize you can use the arrow keys to move among the files in the current folder

you can do something slightly fancier in Preview with a few more clicks; if you have just JPEGs, simply select the files and right-click, choose Preview from the Open With submenu; this will open a full window view with all the images queued up to flip through; now click Slideshow in the toolbar, and as soon as the slide show is up, click the same four rectangles ("index sheet") icon as in Quicklook; now you have full screen thumbnail view; hit the Escape key to get out of slideshow

with PEF & DNG, note that Preview won't normally appear in the Open With contextual menu; easiest way around that is to drag the files onto the preview icon in the Dock
