I have to admit when the link first came up, I saw this guy squatting

the koala.

Frank mentioned that in another post... Maybe I should take the hint and change the look of the blog... :-)

It is certainly a rare occasion to be able to see and photograph a
koala that is not captive in a zoo. I am jealous of the opportunity.
I have to agree that the sky is not too cooperative. I am curious if
you used some kind of flash on this one - seems like the face is just
a bit lacking in depth, more like a flash would do that overpowers
the ambient light a bit. Other than that, pretty cool shot and
experience.

Thanks for the comments, Bruce. Yes I did blast him with a flash, but that normally adds detail and depth when balanced properly. I also added a bit of exposure compensation to overcome the the brightness of the sky (I HAD to overpower the awful white sky or he would ave been a featureless black blob in the silhouette of a gum tree).

Thanks also Dave and Frank for looking. I was hoping to see a wild koala this trip. They are apparently pretty common in this part of New South Wales. The weather just has not been cooperating - it's been raining pretty much every day which is actually good for the area so I'm not complaining :-) - and I haven't been able to get out much to shoot the local wildlife. I've seen a bunch of kangaroos, wallaroos, goannas, and lots of parrots and other birds but just have not been able to photograph them.

Hopefully there will be more to come.
