That's a Geology question :-) Did you remove the stone? or did you find it removed? It looks like a depression, not a rock or shell ... It looks like you are close to the water and the tide was ebbing and you removed the stone or shell just before you took the photo.

30 years ago I could have expounded on the process although fluviation was never my strong suit.
