One of the images I submitted last year came out much darker and duller than I intended it. It's like the contrast is +20, and levels are compressed to black 20 & white 200. [I can apply those settings to the original JPEG and it will look like the one in the book.]

Shadow detail is all blocked up and the highlights are blown out.

The original JPEG looked like I wanted it on my screen, and it looked like I wanted it when I printed it at the photolab, just plugging the jpeg file into the kiosk and printing without making further adjustment at the lab.

I figure I must have done something wrong in converting the image to SRGB before submitting it, and I'd rather not repeat the mistake.

Camera color space is "AdobeRGB"
I'm shooting raw, opening PEF files in Camera Raw 4.6 to edit in Photoshop CS3 (v.10.0.1) - no updates available.

My RGB working space is "ProPhoto RGB".

Color Management policy
RGB "Convert to Working RGB"
Profile Mismatches: "Ask When Opening" checked.

Conversion Options
Engine: "Adobe (ACE)" &
Intent "Relative Colorimetric"
Use Black Point Compensation & Dither (8-bit/channel) are checked

To make the image SRGB I can either "Assign Profile" or "Convert to Profile". The available SRGB is "sRGB IEC61966-2.1"

Should I use Assign or Convert?
Should I assign/convert to SRGB before or after editing my images?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
