Sony has used a root kit -- a mean of surreptitiously taking over your
computer without your knowledge -- to attempt to prevent copying of
music CDs.

See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_CD_copy_protection_scandal>
for a summary.

Beyond "copy protection", the root kit opened any computer on which it was installed to additional mal-ware. And it installed automatically WITHOUT WARNING if one of the affected CDs was played in your computer.

The root kit stayed resident even when you weren't playing their CDs, and caused BSOD errors as well as "phoning home" with information about how you used your computer.

Then, when they got caught, they offered an "uninstaller" that didn't uninstall the root kit, it installed additional mal-ware AND you had to give them an email address to get teh "uninstaller"; an email address they used for SPAM.

You know, I *HAD* forgotten about that shit!
