We've just bought a new machine, with W7 Professional. You should check the Windows 7 compatibility center to see if your hardware is supported in 64-bit mode before doing anything else. Then check for drivers for peripherals you intend to use.
Thanks for the tip. It's been so long since I'd installed a current version of windows, I'd forgotten about the compatibility center thingy.
Of course mostly I didn't worry too much about it because most everything I used wasn't ever listed anyway. XP worked just fine on all of my old home-built computers, and none of them were on the list.
Only ever had compatibility issues with one CD-ROM drive and it WAS on their list. Go figure.
