Tests were conducted on mechanical shutters at Modern Photography in the late
70's?? I really cannot remember and don't have the magazines to reference.  The
marked speeds less than 1/500th of a second were between 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop
out from marked.  So most likely if you were shooting at 1/8000 were really
getting somewhere between 1/4000 and 1/6000 of a second etc.  I don't think
that there's been much improvement in mechanical shutter design since then.
