More seriously ... ;-) ... I've done the same but instead of using a monopod I've used a lightweight light stand. That gives the option to shoot one-handed when it's possible, but then just spread the legs and let it stand on its own when needed. An RF trigger and medium sized flash unit with a bit of a diffuser on it works well for this purpose.
