They were regularly coming within the minimum focus distance of my lens :) They were often perching about 2 feet away and flying even closer. They seemed quite relaxed. They were a little jittery at the camera noises at first but quickly figured out it wasn't a threat. Thanks to everyone who commented. Fantails really brighten my day whenever I see them and it was a real treat to get some decent pics at last.
