Boris, The composition is fine - technically, but not very inspiring. The light is far from the best - but you discussed that already. I would try to play with the contrast/brightness.
Since you mentioned you are going back there, I would entertain one possibility, - to frame so that the RHS part would be just right of the present middle, while the left side - would be almost where it is. This way you'd have to "zoom in". Yet another possibility - is to have the RHS at about 2/3rds of the current position (i.e. only one tree would be in the frame). It might not work, but I'd try.
