In light of the recent discussion about grip for the LX I would like to
warn against it. Not that I try to spoil Rob's sale of wooden LX grip but....
If you drop your LX and it hits mother earth on the grip section the camera
will probably be beyond repair. The reason is the the grip socket is in
fact a part of the chassis so that all the impact energy will go directly
into deforming the chassis. I once destroyed an LX in this manner; the
camera and tripod toppled over and it hit a rock on the grip. The sockets
for the grip and strap was bent leaving a hole directly into the camera.
The repair man said that they could always rebuilt the camera on a new
chassis but it would be cheaper to buy a brand new body. The camera was
still working but it's no fun with an LX with holes in it. If the camera
hadn't had the grip mounted, I believe it would have survived the fall with
just cosmetic damages. If not, it would probably still be repairable.
So if you use the grip, be careful not to drop the camera.
