Like P�l, I do prefer to check out newly acquired lenses, bodies, accessories, etc., to determine their characteristics, but I also don't mind using them right away - except that I am reluctant to use any "new" gear (which for me is usually newly acquired ~used~ gear) for anything important until I've checked it out beforehand.
