Sony manufactured some sensors that got recalled. The Canon A80 was one of the camera models affected. I had the same thing happen with a Canon A60 in 2004.

It started in the video mode but eventually migrated to photo mode. Temperature extremes may play a role in precipitating the problem.

Canon repaired the A60 in 2006 even though it was well out of warranty by then.
