G'day all

Knowing that cricket is a bit of a mystery to many of our North American
and European friends, perhaps I should have chosen one of these images
for the 'Bewildering' PUG theme.

Anyway....

Each year, my wife and I usually take in a day's cricket at the final
game of the season at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This year the match
was between the New South Wales 'Blues' and the South Australian
'Redbacks' (not sure why a cricket team should be named after a deadly
spider - their cricket this season has been anything but deadly). To be
fair, though, the NSW team hasn't exactly set the world alight this year
either, so this final match was being played for pride only.

NSW won the toss and batted, which seemed to be a poor decision early on
when all three of their international opening batsmen were out cheaply.
Fortunately, the middle order fired and NSW finished the day well placed
and eventually won this 4 day match in 3 days.

Photographically, I generally drag out the 300mm f5.6 Tamron SP adaptall
with its dedicated 2x adapter. The combination gives good reach but, of
course, its awfully slow. In previous years this hasn't been too much of
a problem but this year the day was very dull and overcast - so much so
that the ground floodlights were on for the entire day's play. To get
any sort of reasonable shutter speed I was shooting wide open at ISO
800/1600 and focussing was a real problem. Eventually I had to take off
the 2x adapter and resign myself to some serious cropping in post.

Anyway - here's a small gallery of the more acceptable images. Most have
been cropped to some extent.
