When I bought the K-x I pretty much considered the video as something that might be handy now and then.

Tonight, I made the mistake of trying it out in stupidly low light conditions. I was shooting stills at ISO 6400, 1/30 f/1.8. I decided WTF, give the video mode a try to see if I got anything even vaguely usable.

The results were good enough that I spent more time trying to sort out the video than I did practicing still photography with the camera tonight. Many of my short clips are definitely usable. With reasonably competent software, and a reasonably competent person running it, I'm sure that they could be brought up to pretty darned good.

I suppose I'm going to need to start pricing final cut pro or something like that. Any recommendations.

There are quite a few sub $1000 DSLRs that'll also shoot video. Eventually one of the camera companies will come out with a sensor approximately APS sized, that is optimized for video, perhaps 1900x1080, to maximize the dynamic range with big sensor sites. The body will be EVIL because that's what you need for video, and will have adapters will work with DSLR glass from the various manufacturers. They will initially price it under $2000, with a three year price target of $500, and every Yuppie parent that bought a DSLR to take pictures of Junior soccer game will "need" to buy one.
