I just assumed it was a size modifier, as seen in Starbucks.

Grande (which translates as "Large") isn't - it's the middle size.
For "Large" you want "Vente" (and there's now an "Extra Large" size).

But you can't assign Starbucks all the blame for size inflation.
It's the same with eggs - a "Large" egg is the standard 2oz egg
assumed by most recipes.
