That is a very fair criticism. I took the image because something about the sculpture grabbed my attention and held it. I tried to capture the feeling that it aroused in me when I faced it. I tried to make it look more like a statue -- or even a head -- than just a mask. I tried to bring out the slight discolorations and the textures to make it more three dimensional. In the end, however, it is merely a reasonably decent copy of the original, as you point out.
It still affects me, almost as much as the original did. That is probably because I can recall the experience of seeing the original. It is therefore easier for me to experience that feeling than it is to create the feeling in someone looking at the photo who has not seen the original. Does that make sense?
