Hi Bruce: I tried manual focusing just now & then tried AF, still a bit of squeak, especially when 1st focusing far, then focusing close. I also hadn't used it in a while; I got preoccupied with some primes I purchased a while back & hadn't been using this lens. I think it's the lubricant, so I'm going to send it in for a look-see. Thanks. Cheers, Christine

squeaks when focusing--as if a little birdie is chirping inside. I'll be taking it in, to be sure, but any thoughts on what might be causing it to squeak/chirp? Cheers, Christine

Mine did that for a while. A very faint squeak or chirp, like an annoyed mouse. I found that the manual focusing friction had increased too. I also noticed that it would fail to auto focus sometimes when the distance from where it was to being in-focus was small.

I hadn't used that lens for a couple of months, and after I manually "worked" the focus barrel a number of times and took the lens out to give it a workout shooting the noise went away and all has been well since.

I'm guessing that the lubricant was unevenly distributed and the mechanism was a bit sticky. That would cause the SDM motor to work harder--strain a bit--and likely caused the servo positioning signals to become more audible, thus the faint squeaking.

I *suppose* I should really send it in for a look-see, but I tend to follow the "if it ain't broke ..." folk wisdom.
