My book of the year 2009 was The Discovery of France by Graham Robb, which
is a very well-informed and entertaining 'historical guidebook' of France.
It won the 2008 Ondaatje Prize.

Robb is a Professor of French, I think, and knows France from the saddle of
his bike, having pedalled thousands of miles around the country.
Coincidentally, he shares my birthday but he is one year younger than I am.
Probably speaks better French too. Bastard.

His new book is just out, and seems relevant to some of the OT conversations
we've had about Paris recently. It's called Parisians - An Adventure History
of Paris.
