It looks like a rattle snake. Is it?

It's non-poisonous. This is a really small snake, about as big around as a pencil & less than a foot long.

They are frequently mistaken for Copperheads or Water Moccasins by people who don't know any better. Color pattern is similar to Corn Snakes & Copperheads, and they darken with age which accounts for them being mistaken for Water Moccasins.

They're pretty much harmless, but they will try to bite if you mess with them. They ain't got fangs though.

You can see the rock he was on today in this image:

He was in the crevice above the second rock from the left on the bottom row of the pedestal supporting the water wheel axle.

I'm sitting about 15 - 20 feet away shooting with the Sigma 50 - 500 @ 500 mm on my K20D. I had my tripod set up on the lower ledge here in the foreground sitting back against the rock edge you can just barely see.

There were about 8 - 10 of various sizes out there, the biggest about as big around as a garden hose and maybe 2 feet long. They live in the crevices in the rock foundation & like to sun themselves along that little rock wall with the bit of grass just behind it.
