People who own land on the bayou get a handful of coupons or tickets for hunting alligator each year. They are actually tags that have to be tied onto any alligators taken. The quota given out is enough to curb the alligator population. The modus operandi (at least when I was in graduate school) is to hang a dead chicken above the water on a cable with a giant hook. The next morning, you go out on a flatboat to see who bit. Typically there is a large gator hanging from the hook in his mouth. The boat goes next to them, and they are "euthanized" with a single gunshot to the cranium.
