To generate the additional speed. I don't know that the 2 modes use exactly the same number of calories, but I don't think the difference is significant. I could be wrong - maybe I'm just recirculating garbage I've read online. What does make a difference is that it's a lot easier to eat a Mars bar when you're walking than when you're running.
