The pole is for the HUGE diner sign, visible from the interstate. I
tried to position it so that it would have minimal impact, but I
wasn't strong enough to uproot it.

One way around that is to take two photos, moving sideways two or three
feet between them. You end up with the pole blocking different parts in
each of them and when you blend them together, you can eliminate the pole.
