That's one of the reasons I stick almost completely to prime lenses when I'm shooting at the races. Between the dust and stuff the cars kick up, the aerosols they emit, the tire smoke, ..., I figure there's just way too much stuff out there for a zoom lens to pump in and out.
Oddly enough, I've never had problems with dust on the sensor, even though I change lenses a couple of dozen times a day at the races.
