I think that should be "stupid bastards". If they were arrogant they
wouldn't have taken the site down when it was discovered. If they
weren't stupid they would have thought about this ahead of time.

Long ago in the early days of the Internet as a mainstream resource
(mid 1990's), there was much debate over whether image search engines
could save copies of other people's images on their own servers.
(IIRC, Bill Robb had a run-in with one search engine and PUG images
over this issue). The courts decided that it was OK if the saved
images were just thumbnails.

The stupid bastards in question were copying and saving the full-sized
images, not just thumbnails. If just a couple of these images had been
registered by the copyright owners the stupid bastards would have been
in a world of hurt.
