We are quite literally overrun with deer here in New Jersey. There are at least 4 fawns in the yard every day. Several years ago we had two herds -- 0ne in the front yard and one in the back yard -- at the same time. The total was 31 deer.
They eat everything in sight, including the flowers in the planters on my desk. Several years ago we visited Keukenhof Gardens in Holland, with their splendid display of Dutch flowers. When we saw they were selling bulbs, I joked about it being deer food. My wife noticed some wooden tulips, and thought it would be fun to put them in our front garden to make the neighbors jealous. (tulips and roses are the favorites of our deer). We purchased 8 wooden tulips, and brought them home, I painted each a bright color, then applied a heavy coat of shellac. I then placed them on thin wooden dowels and planted them in the front yard. The next day, they had all been bitten off by the deer! Of course, they spit them out, but they just couldn't resist, despite the odor that the paint and shellac must have given off.
