There are different types of 'tethered operation'. One implies
watching what the camera is doing but controlling the shoot with the
camera, then automatically capturing what the camera recorded. Another
implies full camera control and live view of what it's seeing. Another
implies only that what the camera acquired is automatically received
by the computer.

This third is what I've tested using an Eye-Fi card and my otherwise
non-tetherable cameras (Panasonic L1 and G1). I set up the Eye-Fi card
to connect to my laptop over an 802.11g wi-fi link and place whatever
is recorded to the card into a particular folder on the laptop. I also
configure Lightroom to "watch" that folder and auto-import whatever
shows up there, moving it to the correct place in my file repository.
It works pretty well ... transfers both JPEG and raw files in a
reasonable time (I haven't timed it but about 20-30 seconds seems
right), which is then picked up by Lightroom and displayed a few
seconds later.

With the E-1, I have used Olympus Studio 2 which allows both the first
and second tethering operations with a FireWire or USB connection
cable. The E-1 is old and doesn't move data particularly quickly ...
it's about the same speed as the wireless above. This is similar if
not identical to what the Pentax capture application did for the *ist
D and K10D. For these, again you can set Lightroom to watch whatever
folder the control software will push the camera output to and import
it automagically.

The wireless tethering without full camera control is slower but more
convenient ... no tripping over cables or pulling a setup to the
ground by accident. ;-) There are a few tricks to getting it set up
and working right depending on what camera you've got (mostly having
to do with being sure the camera doesn't auto-sleep so the flow of
data isn't interrupted, and making sure you have enough battery power
to keep things running...).
