Forgot to mention that as we were putting our gear back in the car's
backseat at this stop I saw a lightning bolt in my peripheral vision.
Since it was peripheral, I can't be sure, but my perception was that
it was not a downward stroke, but one that went horizontally across
the sky close enough to make us involuntarily DUCK. It was immediately
followed by the sort of "thunder" that I have never heard before (in
my 51 years). It sounded simply like a big rifle report or the crack
of some cosmic bullwhip. It was not an electrical "snap" and it was
not followed by a big boom. It was definitely "thunder" just like the
nearby report of a high powered rifle. Very cool, but also heart
stopping. Suffice it to say we dove into the front seats rather
quickly after that.
