I think it used to happen. Cecil Adams / Straight Dope, Source Of All
That Is Truthful, has some examples where mapmakers intentionally put
false streets etc into their maps.
A buddy of mine was, for a while, a cartographer in Australia.
Apparently he put his name on some out of the way speck of nowhere one time.
