Collin - This months issue of Rangefinder arrived today. It has a story about how some pros are making money as local reps for a baseball-card company. Take shots of local LittleLeaguers, have them made into "Baseball Cards", sell them, make a mint . . .
That fits with what I was going to say before I read the article: just find a niche and work to fill it. Glamour? Local sports? Horse shows? Dog shows? Cat shows? (Mike Johnston, bite your tongue! People pay more to have portraits taken of their cat or dog than they would to have portraits of their kids.) "Product photography" for items to go up on eBay? Cycling? [6,500 cyclists in Columbus every May doing the TOSRV - take photos at the start and midway [Portsmouth] and end . . .] Product photography for local artists entering their wares in juries shows like juries or the Ann Arbor Arts Fair? Also in Rangefinder: several services (geared toward the wedding juries, but usable for whatever) which are designed for the photographer to send digital versions of shots to the service; clients [from the dog show, TOSRV, the Little League game, the wedding, wherever] [but probably best not the glamour shots done for the housewife as a surprise birthday present for the hubby . . .] log on to view "proofs" and order prints. Basic principle seems to be to find a niche and become know for quality product. Maintain standards, be efficient in getting the product to the client. The previous months' issue of Rangefinder featured a story about Peter juries. Everything I said above fits in his case. Though he, and most highly successful ones, seems to have a highly organized spouse who manages the business side of things. Good luck!
