Thanks for all the quick replies. (More opinions are still welcome). In the old days, our proofs were 4"x5", so it seems reasonable to me that if they presented THAT size on a 72dpi monitor it would be the equiv (and therefore "good enough" for the purpose). That would make them 288x442 pixels, which is under all of the estimates given so far.
