Thanks Rick.

For the droplets check out this set-up shot:

<http://www.amnet.net.au/~savage/Misc/Images/D700/Drop%20Set-up.jpg>

I lined my old print developing try with a black plastic garbage bag.
Found some colourful pieces of paper & material to use as a backdrops.
The aim is to light the background, not the water directly.

The drops were supplied by a water bottle with a hole punched in the
bottom. I used a piece of blu tac to adjust the drop rate. I also had
a plastic bag that I pricked with a pin (this was for smaller drops).

2 flashes were set-up on manual @ 1/16th power aimed at the
background. The low power setting is critical. The higher the power
setting, the longer the flash duration longer & you end up with
blurred drops. The shutter speed doesn't ensure freezing motion, it's
the short flash duration.

To ensure I got enough light & DOF I was shooting around f11, 1/200th
@ ISO 1250. Lens was the Voigtlander 125mm macro.

The flashes were fired using Yongnuo RF-602 wireless triggers (much
more reliable than the Cactus triggers).

The rest is trial, error & perfecting my timing. I ended up with about
750 frames after a couple of hours shooting (this is after a lot of in
camera culling), of those 40 were interesting & only about a dozen are
post worthy.

The whole shoot was interesting as it highlighted in my mind how you
photography shiny & refractive objects. You light the background not
the object.

The Tesla coil shot was simply a matter of shooting a bulb exposure
long enough to get a good lighting arc (about 3-5 seconds) & fill in
the foreground with a burst of flash (I set the power to about 1/4
power and fired it using the test button).

Cheers,

Dave
