I'm processing photos from the dance workshop this weekend. There were some performances Saturday night that I shot at ISO 6400 with the K-x. This allowed me to get reasonable shutter speed and depth of Field (f4.5 at 1/50), but the skin tones are on the verge of blowing out. My first thought when I saw the pictures in lightroom was that I had clipped the highlights, but they aren't quite clipped, but almost all detail is lost. It's almost as if rather than having 12 bits to express the full dynamic range, they just multiplied the raw values by 8 so the same physical range is expressed in 9 bits instead.
Someone that has looked at the raw data of the K100 said that this was how they did the high ISOs on it, rather than different circuitry between the sensor and the A/D converter, so I can imagine this happening with the K-x at 6400 as well. -- Larry Colen [email protected] sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
