No, both were shot in S setting. I switch between the two. The C setting will give you a shutter release even if the subject isn't in focus although it will attempt to lock in constantly. The S setting yields more "will not fire" situations, but when it does go, it usually lock right on.

Yes, the first is a relatively slow shutter pan -- 1/40th I believe. While the ap was rather small, so DOF is great. I've found getting a lock on focus with pans isn't as easy as one might think. The distance from camera to subject is changing constantly, if only by a relatively small amount.
