OK I'm checking in again. We still don't have power (using the laptop and 3G modem again). We went to my partner's work this morning to check for damage as they have a lot of hazardous chemicals. It was all fine but her office had power so I was able to recharge my cellphone. The roads were fine but quite a few intersections are out.
I'm pleased to report there are no reported fatalities (yet) which is pretty impressive considering the size. Its been "downgraded" to 7.1 now but I'm surprised the damage wasn't a lot worse considering how close it was. Only a couple of reported injuries so far, caused by falling bricks. I've heard one close escape so far (who happens to be one of our customers at work). Family are all OK which is good. I've been up and taken the damaged chimney down to the roof line. I replaced the broken tiles while I was up there. I took photos for evidence so when we file our insurance claim we should get the final repairs covered... eventually. We're being encouraged to not get out and travel so I don't have photos, I might post a couple of our chimney later. http://www.stuff.co.nz/4095395/7-1-earthquake-photos These photos make it look a lot worse than it is. The central city is pretty much closed down due to the danger of falling masonry as there are a lot of old buildings. The building codes are pretty good here and the only damage we've seen is chimneys. It's lucky the quake struck outside of business hours. I work in the central city so I'll see if I can take some photos during lunchtime on Monday. Assuming our building hasn't fallen to bits, in which case I'll take photos of that. We're still getting occasional aftershocks, mostly small tremors. You tend to hear them coming so it's not so bad... but it wasn't too much fun on the roof :) On 04/09/2010, CheekyGeek <[email protected]> wrote: > With power out, I'm trying to figure out how he posted to the list. > > Darren Addy > Kearney, NE > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > [email protected] > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and > follow the directions. > -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
