I'm back from burning man and am just starting to go through my pictures. Photography there has some interesting challenges. First of all there is the weather and dust. It was windy enough that I didn't want to take my primes out for the most part. As a matter of fact, most afternoons I didn't even take my Pentaxes out. I brought my Argus C-3 to shoot a few rolls just for fun, and ended up doing most of my daytime photography with it. The rolls are being processed and scanned at Bay right now.
Another interesting challenge is that there are a tremendous number of opportunities to get good shots, but it's a lot harder to get good shots that are unique. My goal was to try to not take the merely good, and only go for excellent shots, but I'm afraid that my self control wasn't entirely up to that task. There is the temptation to try to show what it's like with photos, but describing it to someone who hasn't been there is truly impossible, there's no way of understanding what it is like without experiencing it. It was very interesting shooting with the Argus. Yes, I could have used the K1000 I brought, but WTF if you're going retro, might as well do it all the way. The rhythm of shooting with the C3 was so different. 1) Use a hand held meter, or guess at the exposure. 2) Set the exposure 3) Stand where you think you need to be. 4) Focus 5) Compose If composition isn't right, go to 3. 6) Cock the shutter 7) Take the picture 8) Advance the film Also with the greater latitude in exposure, and the much higher cost per frame, I didn't shoot nearly as many frames. There were a few shots that I'd bracket, or retake because I realized I had forgotten to focus, or something, but for the most part, it was one or two frames per shot, rather than trying to dial it in with chimping. I mostly shot with the 18-250 on the K-x. Looking at my shots, I really should have used my monopod more, I lost a lot due to camera motion. There's a big difference between hand holding 20-77mm and hand holding at 250.
