I bought the D300 over the D90 for exactly that feature. Nikon has a large amount of AI glass out there and much of it wasn't available in CPU-equipped form and the AI-S versions are usually considered to be better performers than the AF versions of the same design (especially the 20/2.8, 24/2.8 and 28/2.8)
