Nestled between the town in which I work and the township in which we live is the little Borough of Raritan, NJ, where the North Branch, the South Branch and the Raritan Power Canal merge to form the Old Raritan River.
It is distinguished today mostly as the home of Ortho Pharmaceuticals, one of the divisions of Johnson and Johnson. It's main claim to fame, however, still is as the home town of John Basilone, Marine hero of World War II. This weekend was the annual Basilone weekend in Raritan, with races on Saturday,aI concert by the Quantico Marine Corps Band at the community college and fireworks on Saturday night, and a big parade on Sunday. To give you an idea of the parade, there were eight bagpipe and drum bands, not to mention the three high school bands, two middle school band, the Qantico Band, several fife and drum corps, and numerous military and veteran units (as well as a large Rolling Thunder contingent). John Seda, who played Sgt Basilone in The Pacific, was one of many honored guests riding in convertibles. The parade lasted two hours before the long line of fire and rescue truck streamed down Somerset Street. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=11705871 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=11705873 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=11705870 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=11703474 Dan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
