Nowadays, if I'm being asked to make recommendations for someone
without a vested interested in a particular system, I find it
hard to suggest they go with the bulk and weight of a DSLR.

The four thirds systems (and, in particular, micro four thirds)
offer image quality as good as any DSLR that's over a year older.
Their one weakness is in the breadth of the lens selction that
maintains automation (focus and or aperture). Of course they
don't have some of the cutting-edge features of marginal use to
most photographers such as extremely high frame rates. The one
feature they are missing is an optical viewfinder; it depends on
the photographer as to whether an electronic viewfinder is OK.
I'd take a look at the current Olympus and Panasonic offerings,
and in the lenses offered by them and by a few third parties.

I'm not yet convinced that the other small-body systems such as
the Sony NEX offer enough to a newcomer. The range of lenses is
even more limited than that for a multi-vendor standard.
