I don't presume to know what makes the best modern camera for a child
who loves to take photos, particularly a child now used to what is at
least an advanced amateur camera with three professional-quality
lenses. What alternative would be better? Teaching her how to focus
manually when the AF doesn't succeed properly seems a more sensible
approach. And buy something simpler if she's not ready to learn that.

I teach my students NOT to rely upon automation, NOT to rely upon the
machine ... to rely upon their own understanding and knowledge of what
ought to work well and then instruct the machine to do the right thing
when its programming leads it in the wrong direction. I think it's
actually better to hand a student a camera with little or poor
automation so that they become creative and thoughtful about using it
to obtain good results. The only risk is negative-return stress, and
you can help overcome that with support and instruction.

In my (ideal) world, I control the machines ... they do not tell me
what I can do. ;-)
