Colour negative film is the easier option for night photography because it's much more tolerant about exposure and it has a flatter contrast curve, i.e. it is far easier to print or scan than slide film. Try Kodak Elitecolor 100 or Portra 160 VC. Don't forget Mr. Schwarzschild. If in doubt, overexpose generously. Those modern emulsions take incredible over-exposure without blocking. Underexposure OTOH easily causes grain/noise in the darker areas. My usual times are around 45 secs at f8 and ISO 160 in an industrial surrounding with bright highlights and deep shadows.
