As much as I like old cameras much more than new ones, the new ones (some of them, though. Not Nikons! F80 sucks finder-wise) have much better focusing screens. Here is a post on camera-fix group I think you might find interesting... The problem is IIRC that Spotmatics use different arrangement, where there is a (**)separate groundglass with aid and separate fresnel/field lens which brightens the corners, while newer M series (and perhaps some K too) use (*)one groundglass with pressed-on fresnel screen, so the former is (**)two-piece, the latter (*)one-piece unit. But according to the guy there, it works...: >> I fitted a diagonal split image screen for one of the Chinese K1000 >> copies, straight into a Spotmatic, I took the 2 screens[**] out, and >> replaced it with the single[*] screen. >> From memory I think I put a little bit more of bend in the brass >> spring which holds the screen against the base of the tray it sits >> in, >> apart from that no other changes were made. >> I think the screens would be about $8 plus postage. >> Colin. > I forgot to mention, I checked the focus with a focus checker, at the > film plane after I fitted the new screen, and it was O.K. > Colin. * ... see above ** ... see above I guess I could provide his mail here, but I better ask first :) So if interested, mail me offlist.
