it's probably "relatively safe" but certainly not foolproof; it sounds like you are more concerned about accidentally making photos public than about hackers compromising the site, so an easy test is to log out of your site (and/or use another browser where you aren't logged in) and see if you can access the site
there's also a trust issue -- anyone who has access might copy the photos to a public location
